It’s that time of year again, we start getting excited about the sunshine and the first nice days of the year and then BAM – it hits you! The sneezing, watery eyes, runny nose, sinus congestion, and sneezing that you had a brief reprieve from over the winter. Your allergies are in full swing again. But hey, being inside all the time isn’t so bad, right?

We know exactly how you feel! We see so many people come into our office in the same situation. But usually allergies and sinus issues aren’t even at the top of their ‘problem list’ because they have just accepted that they have to live with it. We share with them that these can improve too under chiropractic care, and most of the time this doesn’t even register. They are completely consumed with the primary reason they came in, like chronic pain or migraines, and understandably that is their main concern. And then something really cool happens. We evaluate progress in our office on a regular basis, and this gives us a chance to sit down and really see how things are changing and improving. And what we hear is this – “You know, I know I came in for migraines and those have gotten so much better. But what I’ve also noticed is my allergies aren’t nearly as bad as they used to be. That’s probably because my body is functioning better, right?” YES! Yes, yes, yes!

Allergies are an inappropriate over response of our immune system to something our immune system thinks is harmful (like viruses or bacteria), but actually isn’t (pollen, dander, foods, dust, etc.).  The immune system starts the process of ridding your body of these perceived threats with a runny nose, watery eyes, and sneezing. So those annoying symptoms of allergies are really due to the immune system not working properly.

So why do allergies improve with chiropractic care? Chiropractic adjustments specifically deal with the body’s nervous system. The nervous and immune systems are closely related, with the nervous system directly influencing the function of the immune system. With chiropractic care, the nervous system is restored back to proper function and the immune system works more effectively as a result.

Put down that box of tissues and get outside!
